Weekly update templates for indie makers, or let your repo fill one in

Most weekly updates die in week three because writing them is a chore. Below are three templates indie makers actually use. Copy one, or paste a public repo into the generator and get the build-in-public version filled in from your real commits.

What makes a weekly update worth reading

  • Lead with one number. "MRR crossed $1k" beats "great week".
  • List outcomes, not tasks. Readers care what changed for them.
  • Be honest about quiet weeks. A quiet week posted beats a skipped week.
  • End with a question. Replies are what grow a build-in-public audience.

Questions

How long should a weekly update be?

For social posts, 3–6 short lines: a headline number, 2–3 shipped outcomes and a question. Investor updates can run longer but should still fit on one screen.

What if I didn't ship much this week?

Post anyway. Say what you worked on, what you learned or what blocked you. Ship & Shout writes honest quiet-week posts instead of inventing progress.

Can the generator include revenue?

The free tool uses public GitHub data only. After you sign up you can connect Stripe or Lemon Squeezy (read-only) and your MRR, change and a chart are added automatically.

Which day should I post a weekly update?

Pick one day and keep it. Consistency matters more than timing. Many makers post Monday or Friday; Ship & Shout drafts on the day and hour you choose.
