A CHANGELOG.md that updates itself every week

Only 29% of indie repos keep a changelog (we measured 800). Not because nobody cares: writing it is a chore that loses to shipping. This Action does the chore. Every Monday it reads last week's merged PRs, conventional commits and releases, and opens a PR that adds one tidy entry. You review, tweak, merge. Try the output on any public repo below, then add one workflow file.

What goes into each entry

  • Conventional commits on your default branch: feat → Added, fix → Fixed, perf → Improved.
  • Merged PR titles when commits aren't conventional. Dependency bumps, reverts and merge commits are skipped.
  • Stable releases published that week (drafts and pre-releases are left out).
  • The last complete week, Saturday to Friday (UTC). Quiet weeks are skipped, so there are no empty entries.
  • Your words, not ours: titles come straight from your commits and PRs. Nothing is rewritten or invented.

Safe by default

  • It opens a PR you review. Direct commits are opt-in (mode: commit).
  • Running it twice for the same week does nothing.
  • New entries go above old ones and your existing format is left alone.
  • It only talks to the GitHub API with your workflow's own token. Nothing is sent to us: no telemetry, no analytics.

Questions

Does it work on private repositories?

Yes. It runs inside your own GitHub Actions with your repo's token, so private repos work the same as public ones.

Why didn't CI run on the changelog PR?

GitHub doesn't trigger workflows from PRs opened with the default job token. If you need CI on them, pass a fine-grained token with Contents and Pull requests write access as the action's token input.

Can I backfill older weeks?

Yes. Run it by hand with the week input set to any date inside the week you want, for example 2026-09-30.

Is it really free?

Yes, MIT-licensed and it runs on GitHub's free runners. The PR description links to Ship & Shout, which turns the same week into a post for X, LinkedIn and Bluesky. That link is the only thing in it for us.
